About This Tea

Bluenose Tea is a product of the G.E. Barbour company, the same New Brunswick outfit that has been producing King Cole Tea since 1910. Barbours itself dates to 1867, founded in Saint John, NB, the same year Canada became a confederation. The Bluenose name is a badge of Maritime Canadian identity, and this orange pekoe blend carries that regional pride in every box. Blended and packed in Sussex, New Brunswick, Bluenose Tea is a product built for those who know their cup well: straightforward, honest, and without pretension. It is sold in a 72-teabag box and, until recently, had been off the market for some time before making its return as a distinct offering within the Barbours family of brands.

This is a classic orange pekoe black tea in the Maritime Canadian tradition: a reliably consistent, medium-strength cup that suits morning drinking and sits well with milk. It shares the approachable character common to Atlantic Canadian tea culture, where a good strong cup is a daily staple rather than an occasion. Brew it in a warmed mug, add milk if you like, and you have exactly what it promises.

How to brew the perfect cup
  1. Bring fresh cold water to a full boil, around 212°F (100°C).
  2. Warm your mug by rinsing it with a little hot water first, then discard.
  3. Place one teabag in the mug and pour the boiling water directly over it.
  4. Steep for 3 to 5 minutes depending on your preferred strength. Bluenose handles a full 5-minute steep well without going bitter.
  5. Remove the teabag without squeezing, then add milk to taste. A splash of whole milk is the classic Maritime finish.
How does it compare?

Morse's Orange Pekoe is the closest comparison: another Maritime Canadian orange pekoe with the same no-fuss character, though Morse's carries a slightly lighter body. Thompson's Signature Blend is a Northern Irish everyday tea that steps up the strength a notch for those who want more punch. Bewley's Original Blend is the Irish counterpart, similarly unpretentious and built for daily drinking, but with a softer, slightly more rounded finish than Bluenose's clean, brisk cup.
